Striking Space Images – Mendocino Fires

Share with Friends

Even as Cal Fire announced that containment on the 329 thousand acre Ranch fire had increased to 76 percent, NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released stunning new satellite imagery of the blaze.  The first image, taken by the Aqua Earth Observing Satellite, shows the fire actively burning (red in thermal images) north into the Snow Mountain wilderness, while in the fire’s wake burn scars are clearly visible.

The second image taken from the Suomi Polar Orbiting Satellite shows smoke from Western fires pushed to the north and east across North America, and pooling over southern Canada and the Midwest, where air quality alerts have been issued in recent days.
