SOUTH LAKE TAHOE RESIDENTS COME HOME. CALDOR FIRE UP TO 44% CONTAINMENT.

More than 20 thousand residents of South Lake Tahoe were allowed back into their homes late Sunday, and thousands of other east shore residents in Nevada, and west shore residents in California were also allowed to return.

The cancellation of evacuation orders for part of the Tahoe Basin comes as the #CaldorFire containment grew to 44% Monday, and large areas of the fire perimeter cooled under favorable conditions. Although the fire continues to burn along its edges, these are in mostly remote areas away from communities, or within existing fire lines.

Still, mandatory evacuation orders remain in effect for Meyers, the Christmas Valley, and extensive rural areas impacted by the Caldor Fire. (Image 1)

The Caldor Fire has so far burned some 216 thousand acres, and forced the evacuation of more than 43 thousand people.

To the west over Echo Summit, work continues to fight the fire as it pushes north into Desolation Wilderness. This includes water drops and ground attack to protect the cabins around Echo Lake and the scenic Wrights Lake area in the Crystal Basin just west of Desolation. (Image 3)

Another active fire area is on the southeast flank, where the blaze has burned to the north and east of the Kirkwood Ski Resort and was active over the weekend near Caples and Silver Lakes. Water drops have been ongoing across this part of the fire to slow the advance of flames. (Image 4)
