Sand Fire in Yolo County Slows Growth

The largest blaze in Northern California is growing slowly today, and a crew of 500 firefighters are on the scene.

The Sand Fire east of Clear Lake broke out in grasslands at about 3PM Saturday, and had grown to 1700 acres by the evening. Smoke could be seen, and smelled from Santa Rosa and much of Sonoma County.

As of Sunday morning, Cal Fire reports the blaze had only grown by 100 acres overnight, and light winds were helping crews on the scene.

Here is how the smoke from the fire looked Sunday morning from the Lake Berryessa area.

Cal Fire expects to make good progress on the fire today.

Meanwhile, PG&E shut off power to 16 hundred customers in Napa, Solano and Yolo counties due to high winds Red Flag fire conditions, and extended the blackouts late Saturday to include 43 thousand customers in the foothills of the Sierra from Butte county south to Placer county.
