Region Prepares for Giant, Far-Reaching Power Shutoffs

Share with Friends

Even as the region recovers from the last PSPS event, PG&E has announced a huge new power shutoff event beginning Saturday as dire forecasts predict winds may reach 80 miles per hour on peaks in the North Bay, and affect a huge area of Northern California.

PG&E has released maps showing this PSPS event will likely be even larger than the one two weeks ago that blacked out 2 million California residents, at some 700 thousand homes and businesses.

A Red Flag Warning has been issued, from 8PM Satursday through 11AM Monday. Forecast of winds speeds from the National Weather Service show the North Bay will be heavily impacted, but strong winds will be widespread across the region.

As of Friday morning, PG&E had not updated how many customers would be affected, but their maps show the power shutoffs affecting a vast region of the North Bay, Sierra Nevada foothills, the Bay Area and central coast.
