North Bay Power Shutoffs Begin at 4PM

Even as 50 thousand residents of northern Sonoma County are being asked to leave their homes in a historic evacuation, PG&E announced that they will begin shutting off power to 93 thousand homes and businesses in Sonoma County beginning at 4PM.

That action was taken in anticipation of a high wind event tonight, lasting into early Monday, that could bring wind gust up to 75 miles per hour into the highest hills, and 45 miles per hour in the valleys of the North Bay.  All of this as the Kincade Fire east of Geyserville continues to grow with little containment.

The fear is that the blaze may threaten homes in heavily populated areas of Sonoma County, and that residents may interfere with first responders and firefighters.

The shutoffs will affect 93 thousand customers in Sonoma County, 11 thousand in Napa County, 13 thousand in Mendocino County, 37 thousand in Lake County, and 87 thousand in Marin County.

Throughout PG&E’s service area, 940 thousand customers will be blacked out by current projections in an outage that could last days.

That power shutoff will impact much of the North Bay.  To access information about whether you are affected, go to PG&E’s address lookup tool:

This morning at 10AM, Cal Fire, the County of Sonoma and state officials announced the mandatory evacuation of homes and businesses along the Highway 101 corridor, including Geyserville, Healdsburg, Windsor and rural areas around those cities.  Shelters have been set up at the Veterans Building in Santa Rosa, the Petaluma Veterans Building, and the Petaluma Fairgrounds.  In addition, many of those evacuated are heading south to stay with friends and family.  Officials hope to have the evacuations completed by 4PM, or at latest by nightfall.

In additional, an evacuation warning remains in effect for large areas of western Sonoma County.
