California Governor Gavin Newsom came out forcefully Friday on the side of peaceful protesters across California, decrying violence against those participating in demonstrations and calling for the state to lead the nation in confronting the issues of inequality, racism, and police use of force.

In a major address delivered from the California Museum in Sacramento, the governor argued that California must lead the nation in confronting, and acting on systemic racism.  In the address, he announced that the practice of using carotid chokeholds would be no longer taught to officers in California, and he would support a bill to ban its use statewide.

He also said this would be just the first step in a full scale, sweeping reform of police practices in the use of force and the justice system under his watch.
