Hundreds Rally at Rohnert Park Police Station in Support of Black Lives Matter

In the two weeks since the death of George Floyd set off a wave of protests across Sonoma County and the nation, Rohnert Park has been mostly quiet.  That changed on Saturday when the city was a scene of a March for Justice and in support of Black Lives Matter.

The family-friendly march drew hundreds of protesters who left the Spreckels Center parking lot and walked a mile and a half to the public safety building for a spirited rally.

According to organizers, the march was put together in six days by a group of Rohnert Park mothers who felt it was important to have their voices and the community’s heard on the issues of police brutality and diversity.

One of those mothers was Jackie Elward, a candidate for Rohnert Park City Council.  She addressed the crowd in an emotional speach, describing her experiences raising black children in Rohnert Park, and fearing for their safety.

And she told those on hand that electing officials that reflect the diversity of the community is one key to solving issues of police misconduct.
