Heat Record Set at 85 Degrees. Cool Down and Rain Coming.

In one of the hottest days ever for this early in the season, Santa Rosa and the rest of the North Bay sizzled on Tuesday, with at least one more warm day still to come.

The Sonoma County Airport reached 85 degrees, not just setting a record but destroying the old record for the date by some 14 degrees.  The Napa Airport also set a record at 76 degrees.  Downtown Santa Rosa hit 82 degrees…hot, but not a record for the date.

By the end of the week we can expect a dramatic cool down, with a cold blast bringing high temperatures for the weekend down to the high 50s.   The weather service predicts highs Friday of 59 degrees, 58 degrees Saturday and 59 degrees Sunday.

Along with this, we will have a chance of showers, with rain chances ramping up through the coming week.

As of Wednesday, you can see the cold front for the weekend lurking in the North Pacific.

Although the models are not in agreement, there is a chance for rain by Saturday along with much cooler temperatures.

And, you might notice another blob of green further to the West.  That low pressure system and the path it takes will dominate our weather next week.  By next Wednesday the low and rain will be coming inland…but whether we will see the brunt of it, or it will track into Southern California is still up in the air.

Here’s the Canadian Model for next Thursday into Friday.  It shows rain covering Northern California.  The usually reliable European Model is similar.

Other models have different tracks, some taking the storm to the south.  That’s not what we want.

As for rainfall, by next Friday most models show significant rain for our region and especially Central California.

And, with a trough hugging the West Coast, it looks good for more stormy weather through late March.

And the long range outlooks for the next three weeks look promising…with above average rainfall forecast.

So, hang in there!  Although the winter has delivered only half of the normal rainfall so far across most of California, there is still a good chance we could make a strong comeback as March continues.
