The Northern California satellite view Thursday shows the Lava, Tennant and Salt Fires burning in Shasta and Siskiyou counties. (Image 1) Coastal stratus was keeping the California and Oregon coast significantly cooler than inland areas.

Extreme fire behavior has been reported with the Lava Fire on the slopes of Mt. Shasta (Image 2) and the newest blaze, the Salt Fire, which was being battled near and along I-5 and for a time forced the closure of the freeway. (Image 3) Together the Lava and Tennant Fires have burned some 30K acres, and the Salt Fire 3K acres south of Lakehead, CA.

Across the North Bay and the Bay Area a stable and fairly tranquil weather pattern is expected through the holiday weekend. NIght and morning stratus will reach the inland valleys keeping temperatures down and seasonable through Independence Day and the beginning of the coming week. There may be a slight warming trend as high pressure noses into the region, but a robust marine layer will keep coastal areas relatively mild. Further inland, scattered thunderstorms are expected along the Sierra crest, mainly south of I-80 through the weekend.
