Airport Adds Flights, Braces for Growth

Although it sports among the smallest commercial terminals in California, Charles Schulz Sonoma County Airport continues to grow, and in the next few months will welcome several new flights to its expanding offerings.

Beginning on February 13th, American Airlines will add a 2nd daily flight from Santa Rosa to its Phoenix hub, a huge deal for travelers making connections nationwide. This comes three years to the month after the airline kicked off service to Phoenix.

Meantime, a month later in March Alaska Airlines plans to add one additional daily flight to both San Diego and Orange County, and in June United will add a 2nd daily flight to its hub in Denver.

All of these new flights came about as the airport reported another record year, hosting some 488 thousand passengers in 2019, almost 50 thousand more than the year before.

While those new flights were being announced, Sun Country confirmed that it will again offer seasonal service to Las Vegas and Minneapolis, and American plans to again offer seasonal flights to Dallas and Los Angeles. There are also hints those flights may become year-round offerings.

The expanded schedule comes as the airport embarks this year on a multi-phase expansion project, designed to more than double the terminal size in two years time.

Airport Director Jon Stout told us the airport is seeing strong demand from local residents, and the much anticipated expansion is long overdue.
