A largely peaceful protest in downtown Santa Rosa and neighborhoods north of downtown ended with the arrest more than 75 individuals after numerous demonstrators defied the city’s 8 p.m. curfew for hours late Tuesday night.

It was the 4th night of marches in the city in which mostly youthful demonstrators demanded Justice for George Floyd and other victims of police violence.

Journalists accompanying the march shared images of protesters occupying streets and facing off with lines of police in several locations. Those journalists reported the majority of participants dispersed peacefully by about 10pm after marching for hours.

The great majority of arrests took place without violence near the intersection of Mendocino and Pacific Avenue in the JC neighborhood around 11pm, where kneeling protesters and others in cars blocking the intersection were seen being taken into custody. However at least one of those arrested was shown on video being wrestled to the ground by police in the traffic intersection. According to police, demonstrators repeatedly ignored orders to disperse and occupied the intersection blocking traffic.

Journalists following the march reported that it was mostly peaceful as it moved through downtown Santa Rosa for some four hours. However in the final hour or so Santa Rosa Police say some demonstrators engaged in scattered incidents of vandalism and looting. In addition to the arrests in the JC neighborhood, several arrests were reported downtown.

The Santa Rosa march was one of many in the Bay Area and nationwide in which demonstrators defied curfews enacted by cities. Many demonstrators say the defiance of curfews is an act of civil disobedience to bring attention to police violence.
