WET, AND GETTING WETTER?

Share with Friends

The forecast for the end of December has turned wet for Northern California. And it may be getting wetter by extending into the first week of January.

SUMMARY

As we reported in our post yesterday (Monday), a stormy period appears to be on the way to Northern California in the last 5 days of December. And now it appears that that storminess may well extend into early January.

DETAILS

A few showers may fall on Friday the 23rd as a weak system passes to our north. (Image 1) But, that’s not the big story.

Even as high pressure builds back in, bringing us a warm Christmas weekend, a major pattern change is in the works.

First, a strong jet stream develops over the Pacific, west of California. (Image 2) Then a parade of storm energy looks poised to follow those steering winds into the Pacific Northwest and Northern California. (Image 3)

The first storm may arrive on the 27th, (Image 4) another quick on its heels on the 29th, (Image 5) and another on the 31st. (Image 6)

And, if the models are right, other storms may follow in the first few days of January. (Image 7)

Obviously if this plays out, the rain could add up. (Image 8) Don’t get caught up on totals yet, because at this point much could change.

What we do know is that there is very good model consensus on the pattern change, and that a wet week (or more) is coming at the end of December. All of the major ensemble model runs are showing it.(Images 9-10)

For now let’s cross our fingers and hope the upcoming stormy pattern brings lots of beneficial rain to California and the North Bay.
