Teachers Push Back on Superintendent Pay
The issue wasn’t on the agenda, but that didn’t stop dozens of teachers from descending on the Santa Rosa School Board meeting on Wednesday night, to once again speak out against a proposed salary boost for district Superintendent Diann Kitamura.
The issue has been a hot topic since the board signaled its intention to raise the superintendent’s salary by up to 29 percent, an increase of 60 thousand dollars. The superintendent current earns about 200 thousand dollars each year. The board also proposed raising the salaries of assistant superintendents by double digit amounts.
Board members say the increase is needed to keep up with other, comparable districts in California. But many Santa Rosa teachers, who just negotiated a hard fought 7 percent raise over two years from the district, say the timing and magnitude of the raises are insensitive and unjust, and they brought that message directly to board members during public comments.
The Santa Rosa School Board is expected to make a final decision on salary increases for Kitamura and her assistant superintendents at an upcoming meeting on May 22nd.
