Shelter-in-Place to be Extended to May 1st Across Bay Area

The regional shelter-in-place orders covering 7 Bay Area counties, due to expire on April 7th, will be extended to at least May 1st.

That was the announcement in a joint press release issued on Monday.  Officials say more information about the extension will be released in the next day or two.

The new order will include all of the original counties that instituted shelter-in-place orders on March 17th, covering Alameda, San Francisco, Santa Clara, San Mateo, Contra Costa, Santa Cruz and Marin counties.

Now that the shelter-in-place orders have been extended for the immediate Bay Area, it is widely believed that Sonoma County and other North Bay counties will follow suit.

When they were first announced on March 16th, county officials said the directives would be re-evaluated going forward, with extensions possible.  The Bay Area and California continue to report rising cases of coronavirus, with the number of California cases at almost 6500 as of Monday morning.  The immediate Bay Area accounts for just under 2000 of those cases.

Some emerging evidence suggests that shelter-in-place orders are having an impact in slowing the spread of the virus, and Bay Area officials are awaiting, this week or next, the results of the first modeling data that may confirm that that this is the case.
