McGuire: Flood of COVID-19 Vaccine Expected in May and June

Weekly vaccine shipments to California will more than double to 4 million doses by sometime in May.

That was the optimistic forecast issued by State Senator Mike McGuire on Wednesday as he joined county officials at a virtual community COVID-19 briefing.

McGuire said that at present the state of California was receiving about 1.8 million doses a week. Sonoma County’s portion of that allocation this week was about 8 thousand doses. However McGuire emphasized that total doses reaching the state through direct federal allocations to major medical systems and networks of pharmacies and health centers was much greater.

In recent weeks, Sonoma County was administering more than 4 thousand doses of COVID-19 vaccine a day to county residents. On some days that number has exceeded 7 thousand doses. On Wednesday county officials said that about 2 in 5 or 40% of Sonoma County adults had received at least one shot of vaccine. Total vaccine doses administered, including 2nd shots, stood at around 250 thousand.

However, McGuire said that supply of vaccine will ramp up tremendously in May, and that recent figures showed California was making significant progress, including administering some 3 million vaccine doses in just the first two weeks of March.
