Mail in Voting Lags Across Sonoma County

Share with Friends

As voters flocked to the polls across California and 13 other states on Super Tuesday, elections officials here in Sonoma County say mail in ballots are being returned more slowly than in the past.

As of Monday Sonoma County Registrar of Voters Deva Proto says just over 30 percent of the mail in ballots had been returned, well behind the rate of past elections.  Approximately 80 percent of Sonoma County voters cast their ballots by mail.

Any mail in ballots that are still in voters hands can be turned in at the elections office on Fiscal Drive in Santa Rosa, and at any polling place across the county, until 8PM Tuesday night.

For this primary election the county elections office is also rolling out a new ballot and vote counting system that has so far only been tested in smaller local elections.

The new system will allow county officials to report vote tallies on a elections results website more quickly than before.  It will also allow periodic updates after elections night, and before the vote receives final certification.
