With another three deaths recorded by Sonoma County public health officials, the county’s total of COVID-19 deaths reached 78 on Friday.  This comes as the two week case rate stands at more than 290 per 100 thousand residents.  This case rate puts Sonoma County at or near the top of all counties in the Bay Area over that two week period.

For perspective, the county was placed on the statewide monitoring list weeks ago when its two week rate, combined with other factors, exceeded 100 per 100 thousand residents over two weeks.

The vast majority of deaths have been among residents of the county’s senior care centers, both skilled and residential, where state health workers have been present for several weeks to monitor safety and health protocols in an effort to try to stem new coronavirus infections.

The latest two week period included the county’s highest one day tally of new cases, 197 on August 18th.

As compared to the state of California and the rest of the Bay Area, Sonoma County’s recent case rate has been high.  Case rates can vary depending upon factors like surveillance testing, targeted testing among high risk communities, contact tracing, and other factors.

Here are the numbers for comparison.
