Airport Expansion Brings More Hotels

Even as the Charles Schulz Sonoma County Airport pushes forward with expansion this year, hotel developers are jumping onboard with two new projects at the airport, hotels that when completed will add hundreds of new guest rooms.

Among the two are a 166 room six story Hyatt Place to be built on property very near the airport terminal, which is scheduled to be completed by the winter of next year.  The property would feature a restaurant and rooftop deck.

The other proposal is for a four story Tru by Hilton hotel to go up near Highway 101, and offer just over 100 rooms.  That hotel is also hoping for a completion date next year.

All of this comes as the airport embarks on a multi-phase, multi-year expansion that will eventually triple its size by adding 30 thousand square feet, and offer an in-terminal restaurant, upgraded bathrooms, and larger, baggage, check-in and waiting areas.  The first phase this year would move things around to allow for more extensive construction to begin, with a scheduled completion sometime in 2022.

Despite the addition of new flights, Sonoma County Airport’s check-in and passenger areas remain among the smallest of any commercial facility in the state.

Airport and hotel spokesmen say the expansion of flights and facilities at the Sonoma County airport, and the continuing desirability of Wine County as a destination is why the facility is attracting interest from hotel builders.  It’s believed that passengers from outside Sonoma County will increasingly choose the airport as more hotel rooms become available nearby.
