$2.5 Million for Curbside Debris Cleanup

At a special Thursday meeting, Sonoma County Supervisors approved 2.5 million dollars in funding to clean up household flood debris that has been collecting curbside all across the lower Russian River.

County Supervisor Lynda Hopkins urged the action, as the debris is quickly becoming a health hazard to residents of the region.

Although there have been several collection sites set up in Forestville, Monte Rio, Guerneville and elsewhere, many residents lack the ability to load and transport hundreds of pounds of debris on their own. The money approved will allow waste collection crews to begin curbside pickup of mountains of debris beginning Monday the 11th.

The county is asking those with flood debris to work to get that debris to the curb by next Monday. Crews hope to have all curbside debris picked up by Friday the 15th. They also urge all flood victims to remove all hazardous materials, things like propane tanks, chemicals and paints, for a separate toxic waste collection.

An estimated 2 thousand tons of debris will have been hauled away from drop off sites by this weekend, at a cost to the county of about 1 million dollars.
