THE BIG PICTURE

The North Bay will see five days of rain, with brief breaks, from early Friday morning through Tuesday. During this AR event the wettest parts of the region may see 6-10 inches of rain. Most areas should receive 5 inches by next Wednesday if the current forecasts are correct.

THE MOISTURE PLUME

The moisture plume starts broad on Friday, bringing rain to the North Bay by early morning.

By Sunday the moisture stream is forecast to lift north and become narrower, but still aimed at the North Bay and Northern California.

So, although the details vary, most models now agree on five days of rain, with a few breaks, from early Friday to sometime Tuesday when the cold front passes through and the moisture plume is shoved south.

The Scripps Center which tracks AR’s across the West now forecasts this moisture plume to be of moderate intensity for the Sonoma Coast. There will be several peaks from Saturday into Tuesday. Classic Pineapple Express.

The National Blend of models is a good estimate of potential rainfall totals across the North Bay by Wednesday. About half of this will fall from Friday through Sunday, and half from Monday through Tuesday.

As you can see, the mountains of the North Bay may receive 8-10 inches of rain by Wednesday.

And here’s the more simplified NWS rainfall forecast through Wednesday.

So, batten down the hatches. There may be more rain later next week headed to the North Bay, but for now we’ll deal with the upcoming storm.
