Sonoma County Turnout Passes 65%. Two days of Voting Left

With two full days of in-person voting left, and thousands of mail in and drop off ballots still to be collected and tallied, Sonoma County election officials announced Monday morning that the county had passed 65% turnout for the 2020 General Election.

As of early on November 2nd, the county Registrar of Voters office had received and processed 196,148 ballots from the 300,586 registered voters in the county.  Official counting of ballots will begin at 8PM on Tuesday, November 3rd.

For more than a week Sonoma County has been running well ahead of most past elections in the number of ballots returned.  That is due in large part to new rules this year enacted by the state legislature in response to the coronavirus pandemic.  Those required that all registered voters in the state receive ballots by mail, and that counties provide a set number of ballot drop boxes and voting sites based on population.  The rules also provided for 4 days of voting in person.  In Sonoma County this is taking place at 30 sites across the county, and at 20 ballot drop box locations.  For a list of both, visit this link:

The largest county turnout in a General Election was back in 2008, with 93% of the county’s registered voters casting ballots. Sonoma County Registrar of Voters Deva Marie Proto says actual turnout will be hard to forecast due to the changes this election cycle, but voters appear to be excited and engaged.
