Even as the first signs emerged this week that shelter-in-place may be having an impact, officials in Sonoma County, like others across the state, were ramping up planning for a potential spike in new coronavirus cases.

And that means finding ways to accommodate a possible rush of critically ill coronavirus patients, a surge with the potential to overwhelm the regional healthcare system.

As Karl Van Amburg reports, the answer for Sonoma County and others in California lies in turning ordinary public spaces, into temporary medical facilities.
