Sonoma County Park Restrictions Eased

Saying county residents were doing “an extraordinary job” in slowing the spread of the coronavirus, Sonoma County’s health officer acted Tuesday to ease restrictions on the use of parks.

The revised order by Dr. Sundari Mase means that county residents can now drive to parks, but not beaches, and depending on the park, may be able to use tennis courts, basketball courts and other recreational facilities.  The order allows local park managers the final say on when, and to what degree that outdoor facilities will be opened.

The order opens beaches to those who live nearby, but beach and coastal parking lots remain closed.  Swimming and sunbathing is not yet allowed.

Also remaining off limits for now are any facilities that bring people into close proximity, like campgrounds, playgrounds, dog parks, picnic areas and drinking fountains.

The new order follows state guidance issued today that empowered local health officers to relax some park restrictions.  Anyone visiting parks must still practice social distancing and wear a mask if needed.

Despite the new rules, Mase and county officials urge residents to avoid driving if possible, and continue to use their own community parks if possible.
