Sonoma County, Bay Area School Out Through May 1st
Following the lead of Bay Area counties, the Sonoma County Office of Education has announced that all of Sonoma County 40 school districts will stay closed, and continue distance learning, through May 1st.
Leaders of local school districts plan to meet again in mid-April to re-evaluate the situation, and discuss a possible date for the resumption of in-person classes. The office says if the statewide shelter-in-place order is lifted before April 30th, school districts will respond appropriately and would consider resuming classes earlier.
All of this comes after Bay Area school districts, including Marin, opted to extend school closures earlier in the week. Along with Sonoma County, closures through May 1st will be taking place in Napa, Marin and Solano counties.
Early next week, Santa Rosa City Schools, the county’s largest district serving 16 thousand students, plans to distribute up to 3 thousand Chromebooks to students without other access to the internet in order to continue their studies while schools are closed.
