SMALL UPTICK IN CASES, BUT SONOMA COUNTY LIKELY TO REACH ORANGE TIER ON WEDNESDAY

Despite a uptick in the COVID-19 case rate in the past week, Sonoma County is all but assured of moving into the state’s less restrictive orange tier of coronavirus restrictions on Wednesday.

At a media briefing on Monday, Sonoma County health officials said they were concerned about a recent leveling off and even slight upturn in the number of coronavirus cases recorded in the county. Monday’s case rate of 4.3 daily cases per 100 thousand is up from 3.6 just last week. At this rate the county would fall short of moving to the orange tier based on current criteria.

However, those criteria are about to change. On Tuesday California is expected to reach a milestone of 4 million doses of vaccine delivered to the state’s most disadvantaged communities. When that happens, the case rate for reaching the orange tier will automatically be revised upward to 6 daily cases per 100 thousand.

In short, that means Sonoma County will be advanced to the orange tier on Wednesday, unless cases take a sharp turn upward in the next two days.

County officials also announced that vaccine allocations would be increasing from around 12 thousand to 17 thousand doses per week, and that California vaccination officials had agreed to add 1.5 thousand Johnson and Johnson vaccine doses to Sonoma County’s allocation. This follows an appeal for more vaccine by the county’s Board of Supervisors last week.
