SHOWERY FOR NOW. POTENTIALLY BIGGER STORMS FOR 2ND WEEK OF MARCH
THE BIG PICTURE
March will begin showery and blustery with very little actual rainfall reaching the North Bay. However by the 2nd week of March the storm track may dig further south, opening the door to bigger storms for California.
CURRENTLY
A rather impressive looking storm won’t actually amount to much, bringing just a few showers to most of the North Bay late Saturday into Sunday. You can see it moving in on Saturday afternoon.
This will set the stage for a second weak system, due to arrive on Wednesday the 5th. Currently it looks like this storm will mostly miss us to our south. Again, only a few showers are forecast across the North Bay.
WETTER 2ND WEEK OF MARCH
The models are in pretty good agreement on a more active 2nd week of March. Deep low pressure is expected dive south along the West coast, dragging the storm track south into California by around the 9th or 10th of March.
The first potentially much wetter storm is forecast for late on the 9th or early on the 10th of March.
This could bring rainfall of 1/2 to 1 inch across the North Bay.
A second reinforcing trough could bring more storms in off the Pacific from the 12th through the 14th.
Here’s an early look at a storm forecast for the 12th. Two other disturbances may follow it in quick succession. The five day period from the 10th through the 15th looks pretty stormy, cool and blustery right now.
Rainfall could start to pile up by mid-month.
Whatever the actual rainfall numbers turn out to be, all of the models are in good agreement that the 2nd week of March could be wetter than average.
And, since the storms will pull cool air down from the North Pacific, they have the potential to bring significant snowfall to the Sierra and other mountains of California by mid-month.
