Showers this Week. Stormy for Christmas?

The North Bay and the rest of Northern California continues to be at the southern fringe of the storm track, with showery weather moving through every couple of days. That trend looks to continue this week, with hints of bigger storms, and stormier weather on tap for Christmas week.

You can see via satellite the weather systems lined up to brush us this week.

The next storm is due to arrive late Tuesday into Wednesday. As the storms move through they’ll give us a healthy bit of rain. Here is the Canadian model rain forecast for the North Bay through Thursday. Somewhere around a half an inch. Others are similar.

Then, another storm arrives for Saturday into Sunday, perhaps lasting into Monday. This one looks stronger. The models vary, but the GFS shows an additional 1-2 inches across Sonoma County and the North Bay by next Monday.

And, though it’s way out in the long range, early indications are that the period around Christmas Day may also be stormy for Northern California.

A deep low pressure trough is forecast to be off the California coast.

Here is how the well-respected European model sees the weather on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day right now. Stormy.

Again, this is way out there in the long range, but other models agree on the general idea of a Christmas storm. So, if you’re planning to travel, especially to the mountains, be prepared for the possibility of rainy, snowy weather. And certainly a very white Christmas in the Sierra!
