Pure Farming Shines at 9th Heirloom Expo

The Sonoma County Fairgrounds is the center of the pure food and agriculture world this week, as the 9th National Heirloom Expo takes over the site with a bountiful display of fruits, vegetables and rare seeds.

There is even a giant pumpkin contest.

It’s an agricultural expo like no other, a place where some 4 thousand rare varieties of heirloom produce are assembled in one place, at one time. It’s also a place where farmers and gardeners come together to celebrate organic agriculture, and attend educational sessions led by some 100 speakers in the natural and heirloom agricultural field.

As important as the event is for natural food producers to share ideas and successes, the Expo is also a popular educational opportunity for students and teachers. Some 5 thousand kids are expected to attend the event to learn about where their food comes from, and how it is grown.

Exhibitors and vendors come from across the country to show off products, swap unique and rare seeds, and join others in the celebration of natural, organic heirloom agriculture.

Beyond operating expenses, organizers say money raised at the Expo will go to the School Garden Network, which helps schools create gardens and nature-based educational programs for kids.

The National Heirloom Expo continues through Thursday.
