Pacific Gas and Electric has announced the largest potential power shutdown in its history, saying power may be cut to 130 thousand customers in four North Bay counties and hundreds of thousand more customers across northern and central California beginning at 4AM on Wednesday, October 9th including the Bay Area.
In terms of people affected, the Public Safety Shutdown Event could potentially impact more than 160 thousand people in Sonoma County alone, and an additional 100 thousand across Napa, Lake and Mendocino counties, as well as 600 thousand additional people in the Bay Area.
The shutoffs may stretch from Shasta County in the north to Santa Barbara in the south.

The unprecedented event is being driven by forecasts of strong, dry north winds that could arrive across the region by late on Tuesday, and continue into midday Thursday.
PG&E has issued shutoff maps that will be refined, but at present show much of central Sonoma County, especially near the hills, affected.
News of the North Bay will post additional updates as conditions change in the coming hours and days.
