Low Snow Levels and Showery. Stormy in Sierra for Holiday Weekend.

After our big atmospheric river event this week, Sonoma County and the rest of the North Bay can expect much colder and showery weather for the weekend. And, yes, more of the white stuff on the area’s peaks.

You can see a cold trough of low pressure from the Gulf of Alaska spilling south, and sending bands of rain into Northern California at midday Friday.

Snow was already falling Friday morning at Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, the Geysers, and on the top of Sonoma Mountain. As all of this cold air arrives, snow levels will continue to drop, falling below 2 thousand feet by the end of the weekend. There may be accumulations of up to 5 inches of snow on mountaintops like St. Helena, Cobb Mountain near Clearlake, and in the Geysers area.

Cold showers will continue off and on through the weekend, with dry but colder weather to start the upcoming week.

For those heading to the Sierra for some President’s Weekend skiing and boarding, the going will be rough, but the snow will be light and powdery.

Heavy snow and very low snow levels will mean chains or 4WD will likely be required throughout the weekend. Here’s a look at the additional snow expected through Sunday.
