Late Season Rain Storm Could Drop 2 inches in Wet Spots

A powerful storm by mid-May standards is poised to arrive in the North Bay around sunset.

Rain will continue through Sunday, before tapering off Sunday night. Monday may bring showers, with a chance of thundershowers.

The deep upper level low and cold front resembles a mid-winter storm.

Unusual for late in the season, the deep low is tapping a subtropical moisture source north of Hawaii.

With a precipitable moisture column of 1.4 inches aimed at Northern California, it qualifies as a mild atmospheric river.

Heavy rain will fall in Northern California (the heaviest north of us) and Southern Oregon.

By Monday, the low center is forecast to drift south to near the Bay Area, and the widespread rain of Sunday will turn to showers.

Most of Sonoma County will receive about one half to one inch of rain by late Monday, pretty healthy amounts for mid-May. However, due to the moist southwest flow, orographically enhanced rain will fall in the hills of the North Bay with 2 inches plus possible.

And for the next 10 days or so it looks to stay cool, with California under the influence of low pressure troughs passing by to our north. Looks like no big warm ups coming until late in the month.
