Kincade at 66K Acres, Some Incursions into Windsor, Mark West

As much of Sonoma County awoke to a third day of evacuations and power outages, the Kincade Fire has grown to just over 66 thousand acres, and containment is at 5 percent. Importantly, the fire has been burning along the fringes of the cities of Windsor and the Mark West/Larkfield area, with some homes reportedly burned in the Shiloh Estates and others threatened or burned along Faught Road.

While the fire continues to grow, the rate of spread is much less, as winds Monday morning are blowing from 5 to 15 miles per hour, and not the gale force and higher gusts of 24 hours ago. Much of the fire growth has been to the east and southeast toward Mt. St. Helena.

Firefighters have dug in lines around the eastern fringes of Healdsburg and Windsor, and that work continues today. In addition, crews spent the night defending structures, in most cases successfully as the Kincade fire made runs on its southwestern border around Windsor and toward the northern edge of Santa Rosa.

The fire has apparently not crossed Highway 101, while burning almost to it near Arata Lane in north Windsor. Keeping the fire from crossing 101 was and continues to be a top priority for firefighters, as computer modeling showed that the fire, if driven by high winds, could make rapid runs west down the Russian River valley.

Evacuation orders remain in place for much of Northern and Western Sonoma county….more than 180 thousand people ordered out of their homes in the largest evacuation in North Bay history. Whether some residents, especially in West County, may be allowed back in their homes today will depend upon a decision by the Sonoma County Sheriff, in coordination with Cal Fire officials. Meanwhile, PG&E says it will begin restoring power to some of the 300 thousand people, representing over 95 thousand customers in Sonoma County, and around 100 thousand customers in Marin County as well as thousands elsewhere in the North Bay sometime today.
