Hot? Cold and Rain to arrive late Monday
If you think it’s a bit hot for early May, you’re right. The Sonoma County Airport hit 92 degrees at around 4PM Thursday and more heat is on the way for Friday. Possibly record-setting.
But, if the current trends hold, by next Monday and Tuesday the North Bay should be turning wet and cold, with high temperatures up to 30 degrees cooler than they have been.
Before we get there though, we can expect another very hot day Friday, with just a bit of cooling this weekend.
The satellite image shows a deep area of low pressure forming in the Gulf of Alaska. That will be our weather maker for early next week.
For Friday, a high pressure ridge across the West Coast will continue to bring near record temperatures. However you can see the deep low forming to our north.
On Saturday, the high pressure ridge will begin to shift east, and as it does the cold low pressure center to our north will drop south. By Monday very cool air (for May) and showers will arrive.
As for rain, most models show it holding off until Monday afternoon. Then showers will continue off and on through early on Wednesday. We may pick up around a third to a half inch of rain in the North Bay by late Wednesday.
Pretty solid rain for May, and a nice way to ease early season fire concerns.
Temperatures will cool into the 60s for highs on Monday and Tuesday, and stay cooler than normal through midweek. And long range forecasts hint that cool, showery weather may bring above normal rainfall across Northern California through mid month and beyond.
Here is the outlook for rain over the next two weeks or so. Not bad for May!
