EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING EXTENDED. (SLOW) COOLING BEGINS THURSDAY.

The National Weather Service has extended the Heat Advisories and Warnings through Thursday as stubborn high pressure holds on over California and the North Bay.

Today, the first hint of cooling could be seen at the coast, with temperatures at the immediate coast around 10-15 degrees cooler than Tuesday due to the return of a shallow marine layer.

Overall, that cooling didn’t reach inland areas of the North Bay on Wednesday, with scorching temperatures still near record levels.

But, there are changes just ahead. The high pressure dome centered directly over Central California today is beginning to move east. The first graphic below is the location today, and the 2nd is the forecast location of the high pressure center on Friday.

This will cool the upper air, which will bring cooling down at the surface. The bubble of hot air above us will go from this today,

to this on Friday.

Clearly, it’ll still be hotter than normal for October, but not at the record levels of the past two days. Probably 90-100 in the hottest areas beginning Thursday, instead of 100-107. So, the cooling will be gradual, but we’ll notice it.

The gradual cooling trend will bring us back into the 80s eventually, but probably not until Monday of next week. And when will we get a blast of cool fall-like weather? At this point it looks like a cool trough may try to push in around the 11th or 12th, as you can see in the European outlook below. The GFS model sees this too. But only the European brings in some showers that day (Friday the 11th).

This is ten days out in our forecast and very uncertain, so take all of this, especially the showers, with a grain of salt. But for now we’ll enjoy the very gradual cool down that looks to begin tomorrow. Stay tuned for updates!
