EVEN BIGGER STORMS THIS WEEKEND?

Share with Friends

Even as our latest storm series moves out, another is poised to dive in from the Gulf of Alaska beginning Thursday. And, if early forecasts are accurate, these storms may be even wetter than those of the past few days.

The 3 day rainfall totals across the North Bay have been healthy.

The next storms are visible on satellite spinning up near Alaska.

By Thursday, a low pressure trough will dig south along the West Coast.

A bit of rain may arrive Thursday, but the real action appears to be Saturday through Monday of this week. That’s when a deep low is forecast to arrive off the California coast.

And by midday Saturday the 10th, a storm with lots of energy and moisture is currently forecast to spread rain and mountain snow over all of Northern Califonia and continue through Sunday, perhaps into Monday.

Rainfall totals? Well, what I’m about to show you will certainly change, but the models are REALLY bullish on this storm series. If these numbers verify in the next few days, this Saturday-Monday storm will be, by far, the wettest of the young season.

First the European outlook for total rain by Tuesday the 13th. This and the GFS model are the currently the wettest.

The WPC blended model is showing more moderate totals.

As we know, lots can change in a week. There is pretty good model agreement on a major storm for next weekend. But how big, is still in question.

Right now a weak to moderate atmospheric river plume of moisture is forecast for the Sonoma coast from Saturday into Sunday.

So that’s another forecast that supports a major storm. In addition, the jet stream forecast for next Saturday-Sunday shows a powerful jet streak dipping into Northern California.

We’ll keep an eye on developments this week and provide updates. If all of this comes to pass, it will launch Northern California into a much-needed wet start to the rainy season.
