Dozens of Homes Lost, One Reported Injury in Cache Fire in Clearlake
Lake County authorities now say between 40 and 50 homes were destroyed Wednesday afternoon in and around the Cache Creek Mobile Home Estates and the Creekside Mobile Home Park at the south edge of the town of Clearlake.
The two mobile home parks are located adjacent to each other just off Dam Road and near Lower Lake Elementary School.
The #cachefire grew quickly Wednesday afternoon, reaching almost 100 acres before fire crews could stop forward progress. The blaze broke out near the south edge of the town of Clearlake, and burned into a neighborhood just to the north of the town of Lower Lake. In the late afternoon aerial views showed the area of burned homes, along with fire retardant covering homes nearby. Neighborhoods to the south and east of the fire were evacuated, and highways 29 and 53 were briefly closed.
There was one injury reported, and mandatory evacuations were ordered for an area south and east of the towns of Clearlake and Lower Lake. As of 7 p.m. Wednesday, the fire was reported to be 20% contained but forward progress was stopped much earlier. The Konocti Unified School District has decided to close all district schools on Thursday.
Early reports were that the blaze was set off by a vehicle fire, however that has not yet been officially confirmed.
Crews will be on the scene all night mopping up and increasing containment. A Red Flag Warning remains in effect for Lake County until 11 a.m. Thursday.
