As Toxic Sweep Continues, Glass Fire Victims Get Winter Prep Assistance

Weeks after the Glass Fire was finally contained, scores of Sonoma County property owners are still awaiting state action to sweep their land of hazardous household debris.  This government-funded sweep is required before owners can move on with clearing the rest of the fire debris from their land.

As of November 19th, the Hazardous Household Waste Sweep had been completed (green) on just over half of the 210 properties outside Santa Rosa city limits burned in the Glass Fire, and was still pending or incomplete on about 150 others (blue).

Meantime, in the city of Santa Rosa most properties have now been swept of hazardous household materials (green).

Once toxics are cleared, most burned properties in the Glass Fire zone will be eligible for a state-funded program to clear the rest of the fire debris.  The city of Santa Rosa requires property owners to return paperwork by December 15th, after hazardous waste has been removed, to qualify for the state cleanup program.

However, even with all of these requirements satisfied, all property owners are still responsible for making sure their land is “rain ready” and prepared with erosion and runoff control measures for the arrival of winter rains.  Luckily a number of government and community organizations are offering help.  Visit these links to find resources, assistance and supplies needed to get your property ready for winter.

On Friday and Monday the Sonoma Ecology Center will be holding two additional workshops to help county residents impacted by the Glass Fire learn how to secure their properties against toxic runoff.  Attendees will be provided with free straw wattles and stakes.  The sessions will be held Friday November 20th and Monday the 23rd from 10AM to 2PM at 5240 St. Helena Road.  Entry to the workshop property will be marked with signs and orange cones.
