Andy Lopez Case Settled

The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office announced a 3 million dollar settlement today in the 5 year old case of Andy Lopez, the 13 year old Santa Rosa boy who was shot and killed by sheriff’s deputy Erick Gelhaus on October 22, 2013. Lopez was carrying a replica rifle at the time of the shooting. The shooting and its aftermath roiled the community, prompting protests and investigations by the District Attorney’s office as well as the FBI. In the end, no charges were filed against the deputy and he is now a sergeant in the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office. The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors voted to agree to the settlement this week. Here is the statement from Sheriff’s spokesman Rob Giordano.
